The Decisions You Have To Make When You Build A Woodshed
When it comes to storage sheds, using lumber is one of the best choices there is. With a proper shed plan and woodworking pattern, you will be able to have not only an effective and easy to build shed, but also a great looking compliment to your property. But, the question is what type of lumber should you use?
The answer to this question lies on your property itself. You need lumber that will compliment your home and garden, and lumber that is easily accessible to you. Other factors include your budget for the project, how elaborate your plans are, and how durable your shed you want to be.
The most popular wood choices are, light woods like ash, maple, poplar, birch and most commonly pine. For a reddish finish, you have a choice between cherry, cedar, red oak and mahogany. For brown woods there are oak, beech and pecan. And for a dark wood finish, you can choose walnut or mahogany.
Consulting your local lumber dealer would give you a chance to make a wise decision as to which wood would be best suited for the climate in your area.
To ensure that your shed will be durable and secure and also effective in protecting your belongings inside, try to use lumber that has been pressure treated. If this is not available to you, you should consider using weather proofing stain if you chose natural wood. Another option would be sealing, staining or coating natural wood with polyurethane. Painting your shed is also another great option, just make sure that it will compliment your existing structure found around the shed.
When it comes to your roof, wood is also a good option. You may either use plywood decking or wooden shingles. But, your roofing material should be determined based on the pitch of your roof. What you’re after is a roof that does not leak, so feel free to use any material that will help you achieve this goal.
Depending on your budget or creativity, you can just buy prefabricated doors and windows. If you have the skills and the time, you can choose from a wide variety of window shapes and styles. Wood is also a great choice in making shelves inside your shed. Racks and cabinets can also be built using leftover wood.
It would be best to have all the basic tools that you will need when working with wood, namely a saw, hammer, drill, framing square, level, nails and screws, and of course your plans. And never forget about safety gear.
